The Over Stern Boom allows seismic arrays to be launched and recovered over the vessel's stern in a safe and secure manner. The boom is driven in and out by a peg drive. The drive sprocket is mounted into the outlet shaft of an inline gearbox. The gearbox is fitted with a failsafe brake and hydraulic motor. Dynamic braking is achieved via a load control valve mounted directly onto the hydraulic motor. Static braking is via the failsafe brake unit fitted in between the hydraulic motor and the gearbox.

The hydraulic signal to the failsafe brake is achieved via a brake shuttle valve within the load control valve. The stern boom is controlled via a 3 slice 3 position, spring return to centre directional control valve. The valves are fitted with motor spools. One slice controls the boom, drive in and out, the other two slices control the two auxiliary winches. A progressive greasing system is fitted.
